How to reduce the costs of your boiler room?

The costs of producing steam more often than not represents a large portion of the costs of producing the finished product.
It is nevertheless possible to reduce some of these costs by limiting the losses of your boiler room in various ways.

Spend less

Monitor your entire boiler room , in particular the combustion settings, excess air and flue gas temperatures which are the main factors in the thermal efficiency of the boiler.

A precisely regulated natural gas boiler must have an efficiency greater than 90%.
A properly regulated oil-fired boiler must have an efficiency of over 85%.

Maintain its distribution network
The losses of a non-insulated network are considerable.
The average loss is 0.37kWh / m for a non-insulated pipe and 0.11kWh / m for an insulated pipe.

Moist insulation due to even minimal leakage consumes more energy than non-insulated pipe.

Adding value to your condensates
Condensate is a source of energy! When your activity allows it (in laundry for example), recovering its condensates is more interesting than sending it to the sewer.
Return your condensate to the boiler room, under pressure if possible.

Take care of your traps
The steam trap is one of the most important devices in your steam network. It allows you to exhaust all the latent heat of the steam and return only the hot water to the boiler room. Intensive trap activity confuses it, and a clogged trap reduces your production and may even shut it down.

Common leaks on untreated traps induce significant losses that can be avoided in the long term.

Collect unavoidable rejections

Fumes, purges and condensates are inevitable releases during steam production. However, with the right equipment, it is possible to recover some of the energy consumed.
The quantities of energy contained in the discharges are of the order of:

– Fumes from the boiler: 10 to 20% of the energy consumed. (Read Economizer , Surface Condenser )
– Deconcentration and bottom extraction purges: 1 to 2% of the energy consumed (interesting and significant for certain processes).
